Room 1 - Colour Games

Room 1 have been learning about colours. We are using games to ask for the colours we need.

Tiano is using his spinner to find out which part of the bear will be red...

It's the bears arm!

Time to find another part of the bear to put on.

A yellow body!

Tiano has nearly finished this bear!

Well done Tiano!  Great work finding colours, naming parts of the bear and using communication!

We also learned how to stay safe during and earthquake....

Room 5 learning from Room 8

Room 5 were very excited to visit Room 8 today because we were going to see their weather experiments. Room 5 are studying the weather this term and we had tried to make a tornado earlier this week but it didn't work very well.

Here is the tornado that Room 8 showed us......

Aaron and Jess are filling up the jar.

Shah is adding the washing up liquid.

Aaron is shaking it from side to side to see if he can create a tornado!

Room 8 also showed us how to make lightning in a jar using silver foil, a drying sheet, pins and a balloon.

The Eco Committee working hard

Recycling is a very important part of school life. Each class has a blue recycling bin. We save paper, plastic,  food cans, drink cans and lots of other material. The Eco Committee take this very seriously and today they were collecting all the bins to put them outside for collection by the big dustbin lorry.

Ula and Shah leading our recycling team!

We put the bins by the wall at the road.

They need to be lined up with the handles pointing outwards.

Job done! But it's a never ending task. Think global- Act Local!

Learning in our community : Room 7 visiting the shops

A trip to the local shops is a valuable learning experience for Room 7. Road traffic is always busy in our local area and we are learning how to choose a safe crossing point and get across the road safely. A trip to the shop teaches us about money and how it is exchanged for goods. We looked at dates on things, prices and saw labels and signs everywhere. We also had to look for the 'Post Office' sign as we had a parcel to post!

Our local shops are very welcoming and we have a good selection to choose from

Emily chose some cold meat for sandwich making

Saeed paid the shopkeeper for our  goods. He got the change back too.

We also went to the post Office to send back recyclable ink cartridges from our school photocopier.

Room 3 visit GLasgow's Botanic Gardens 15.5.17

As part of our Garden Centre Topic, Room 3 decided to visit Glasgow's Botanic Gardens to have a look at all the interesting plants and flower. Here is what we saw.

Abdi found some colourful plants.

These plants are called the Bird of Paradise but we think they look like peacocks

Kelsey and Le Yao like these flowers.

Abdi liked these ones.

Precious orchids

It was like we were in the Jungle

Room 1 - Making Patterns

Room 1 used cubes, blocks and teddies to make different patterns.

Jack is using green and orange cubes to make a pattern.

Tiano and Jack have finished their patterns. What great work!

Jack and Tiano had so much fun they are going to try another pattern!

Room 5 Scientistis

Room 5 have been discovering more about the Earth.  We discovered that the Earth is made up of layers - Crust, Mantle, Outer Core and Inner Core. We made models of the Earth out of clay.

We used this to help us understand all about Volcanoes. Here we are doing our volcano experiments.
Volcanoes are formed deep down inside the Earth. There is magma, lots of gases and it is very hot. Pressure builds up and it has to escape. This is when you get a volcano!

Creating a volcano using water, bicarbonate of soda, washing up liquid, food colouring and vinegar!

Room 8 visited Room 5

Room 8 visited Room 5 to see what they have been learning in STEM.
Room 5 explained what Volcanoes are and where you find them.

They showed us how volcanoes erupt.

It was very interesting, thank you Room 5.

Next week Room 8 will share their learning with Room 5 about tornadoes and lightning.

Room 8 Book Study

The children in Room 8 have been learning all about the adventures of Flat Stanley in New York who woke up one morning and the billboard in his room fell ontop of him flattening him!

Stanley had many adventures! He found his mother's ring that had fallen down a drain, he caught thieves in the Art Gallery, he flew like a kite and he went to visit his friend in California by climbing into a very big envelope and going there by post!

Here are all the characters in the story:

We made our own kites.

                                             Room 8's Statues of Liberty!

We are busy making beautiful United States of America stamps ...photos to follow!

Room 8 are in the mood for STEM activities!

Challenge 1

How to create a Cyclone Tube Tornado

Keira listened really well to Jamie reading the instructions.

Jamie was the Reader for his group.

Jessica filled the glass jar with water.

Jessica squirted some dishwashing liquid into the jar and put the lid back onto the jar.

Mark swirled the jar to create the tornado.

Jamie looked closely to what happened.

Now it was everyone's turn to create a tornado in a glass jar.

Challenge 2
How to create Lightning in a glass jar

John was the reader for this group.
Jacob lined the glass jar with tinfoil
and secured the dryer sheet onto the top of the jar with elastic bands.
Chloe and Eva took turns in sticking thumb tacks into the dryer sheet.
They put the lid back onto the jar.

Everyone took turns in rubbing the inflated balloon on their hair to create static electricity and then placing the balloon onto the top of the metallic lid of the jar. We didn't see the lightning and tried differnt solutions to the 'problem'. We decided we needed time to go away and do some research and think about what we need to change to get the experiment to work again next week.

Jamie and Keira reported back to the other group what they had done and observed.

Everyone had a fantastic time and want to try out both experiments again!
Even Mr Murphy got involved!
