Room 9 looking for signs of Spring

We went for a walk in the woodlands near our school. we wanted to see if there were any signs of spring appearing or was the land still held in winter's icy grip.

Some tree are evergreens and stay green all the year round. Pine trees and Fir trees are evergreens so they won't tell us if spring is near!

Jamie found some intriguing white fur on the ground. Was this a sign that spring was near?

Actually, it was. We met a man with a Siberian Husky dog and he told us the fur had come from his dog which was moulting. Moulting is when an animal sheds its winter fur as it senses spring approaching.

We saw some old dead trees being 'recycled' by mushrooms and fungi. These plants eat the old wood away and return it to the earth where the mulch feeds other plants.

We saw a huge fallen tree which is slowly being broken down by insects and fungi.

Mazin noticed that the solid tree had become soft as the fungi and insects do their work.

We saw lots of Snowdrops. These flowers bloom early in the year and are a sign that there is more sunlight as the days get longer.

Of course, walking to the woods teaches us valuable lessons about crossing the road safely.

John spotted more snowdrops!

Our walk taught us about the beauty and resilience of nature but also about the mess some humans make. We saw beautiful flowers, trees, birds and animals but also litter, plastic and glass which isn't so good.

Did we find spring? Well, no but we did see signs that it's coming closer!

Gym and Art with Room 3

The children from Room 3 worked with Aston to do an obstacle course in the gym hall. It was great fun!

After we had climbed, bounced, rolled and cycled, we went back to class to do some relaxing art activities.

We made wonderful farm scenes as part of our animal topic!

Feeding the Birds at Golden Time

We made bird food to hang on the trees for the birds to eat.

First we mixed the seeds, raisins, peanuts and cheese together.

Then we added lard and used our hands to press all the ingredients together.

We used a spoon to put the ingredients into a cup and put them in the fridge to harden.

Some of the children went outside to hang up their bird food cups!

Kelsey and Justin hung their cups on a tree.
Abdi put his on top of the bird table.

Shah, Aman, James and Aaryn hung their cups on different trees in the playground.

We can't wait to watch the birds eat all the delicious food we made them!

Patterns in Room 5

Room 5 have been working hard and this week we have been learning all about patterns.

Patterns are all around us and Abdi and Ondrej have been learning about patterns with colour.

We have also been learning about numbers patterns. Ula said it was just like multiplication!
Our number pattern - can you guess what it is?
